In front of an astonishing crowd of over 23,000 fans, France lifted the FIVB Volleyball World League trophy for the second time in its history, this time prevailing on an epic battle over host, Brazil, 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 25-23, 19-25, 15-13) with star player Earvin Ngapeth at full display.
Iran continued its poor run away from home as the Asian side was well-beaten at the hands of Poland in straight sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-22) in 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League in the city of Lodz, Poland.
The final day of the FIVB Volleyball World League at the Maracanazinho Arena featured two straight-sets victories; France defeated Serbia 3-0 to claim its first title while the USA upset world champion Poland to win bronze.
The 2014 FIVB World League champion USA got its 2015 campaign off to a winning start on Saturday, beating last year's semifinalist Iran 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23) in Pool B. Taylor Sander scored a game-high 19 points for USA while Shahram Mahmoudi scored 17 for Iran.
The International Volleyball Federation announced that the FIVB Volleyball World League 2015 Group 1 finals will be played at the Maracanazinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The tournament will serve as a test event for the volleyball competition at the Olympic Games in 2016, which will take place at the same venue.
Defending champion the United States will be one of a record 32 teams to participate in the 2015 edition of the FIVB Volleyball World League, the International Volleyball Federation’s premier annual competition for men’s national teams.
