Iranian cinema grabs six awards from sixth edition of Afghanistan’s Herat festival

Iranian films received six awards at the 6th edition of Herat International Women’s Film Festival (HIWFF) in Afghanistan.  

The 6th edition of the festival was held from November 16 to 19, and Saeid Roustaee's ‘Just 6.5’ was awarded with the Golden Earring Statue for Best Feature Narrative (World Cinema).

‘Hava, Maryam, Ayesha’ by Afghan director Sahraa Karimi, produced by Iranian Katayoon Shahabi, won the Golden Earring Statue for Best Feature Narrative (Women’s Cinema).

Also, the Joint Award Certificate for best actress went to Sara Bahrami for ‘Axing,’ directed by ‘Behrouz Shoeibi,’ and ‘The Visit’ by Azadeh Mousavi won the Bronze Earring Statue for Best Short Narrative.

‘Tangle,’ directed by Maleha Gholamzadeh, won the Bronze Earring Statue for Best Animation and ‘Khatemeh,’ by Hadi and Mehdi Zarei, won the Bronze Earrings Statue for Feature Documentary.

Afshin Hashemi’s film ‘Goodbye Shirazi Girl’ also received a certificate of appreciation for the different view of women in his film.

Iran’s prominent female director Narges Abyar, along with filmmaker Bijiya Jena from India, and film producer Heidi Basch-Harod from the US were among the jury panel of the Intentional Narrative Feature Film Competition of the event.

Known as one of the most iconic and prestigious women’s film festivals in the region, the HIWFF is an annual event held in Afghanistan with the aim of highlighting the power of women in different life situations.

The festival was established by the Roya Film House and Armanshahr Foundation/OPEN ASIA in 2013.

This year, out of 300 films submitted from 122 countries, 73 films from 27 countries entered the festival.
