Iran's northwestern province of West Azarbaijan has special capacity to help strengthen bilateral cultural and economic relations with neighboring Republic of Azerbaijan, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi who is appointed as the new Iranian ambassador in Baku has said.

Mousavi, currently the spokesman of Iran's Foreign Ministry, is to take office as the Iranian ambassador in the Republic of Azerbaijan in the coming weeks, IRNA reported on Thursday.

Addressing a meeting with the officials of Iran’s West Azarbaijan province, Mousavi said cooperation with the Republic of Azerbaijan should be put on the agenda in line with Iran's foreign policy on fostering ties with neighboring states.

He added, border provinces play a leading role in facilitating Iran’s policy to enhance bilateral relations with its neighbors.

Noting that Tehran and Baku enjoy good commonalities, Mousavi added that to achieve economic prospects with Azerbaijan, trade problems should be removed between the two capitals.

Iran’s West Azarbaijan province shares a 149-km-long border with Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan province.
